Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Perodua’s first fully Malaysian-made electric vehicle (EV), set to debut at the end of this month, will be declared a “national agenda.” The upcoming model, believed to be named the Perodua QV-E, represents a defining milestone for Malaysia’s automotive industry and a symbol of the nation’s growing capacity for technological innovation.
During his recent visit to Perodua’s headquarters in Rawang, held in conjunction with the celebration of the company’s 5.5 millionth car production milestone, the Prime Minister emphasized that the forthcoming EV embodies his administration’s Madani values of sustainability, affordability, and good governance. According to him, the vehicle represents what the government has been striving for: a locally designed, environmentally responsible car built with cutting-edge technology while remaining within reach for Malaysian consumers.
According to Anwar, “This EV is sustainable, environmentally friendly, locally produced and built with the latest technology, and yet affordable. That’s what Madani means.”
He further stated that he will instruct the Cabinet to elevate the launch of Perodua’s first EV as a major national event, underscoring that this initiative extends beyond the introduction of a new product. The launch, he noted, will symbolize Malaysia’s broader commitment to sustainability, transparency, and social responsibility, while demonstrating the country’s readiness to compete in the global electric mobility market.
In a show of strong personal commitment, the Prime Minister announced that he would take an active role in promoting Perodua internationally. According to him, “I will act as Perodua’s first marketing officer at no cost during my visits to South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia. In those meetings, I’ll tell them straight that Malaysia should be given priority. That’s how we build real international partnerships.”
Anwar also praised Perodua’s achievements as a reflection of Malaysia’s engineering and industrial capabilities, emphasizing the significant role played by Bumiputera engineers and designers in driving the company’s success. According to him, “Perodua’s growth proves that with technology, discipline and good management, nothing is impossible. The EV project is not just about cars; it’s about jobs, innovation and the nation’s future.”
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to Perodua President and CEO Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad and the company’s workforce for their continued dedication and excellence. He highlighted that their efforts have turned Perodua into a symbol of Malaysia’s industrial strength and progress. He also shared a personal reflection, noting that he had purchased his own Myvi years ago and that it remains in use today, a testament to the brand’s quality and reliability.
Anwar urged Perodua to position the upcoming EV as an affordable national pride project that reinforces Malaysia’s global competitiveness in the automotive sector. According to him, “With passion, skill and discipline, there’s nothing Malaysians can’t do.”
Meanwhile, Perodua President Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad noted that while the Bezza 1.3L, which marked the company’s 5.5 millionth unit, continues to be Perodua’s best-selling model since 2024, all attention is now firmly on the brand’s first-ever electric vehicle launch at the end of this month.
The debut of the Perodua QV-E is expected to mark the beginning of a new era for Malaysia’s automotive industry, reinforcing the nation’s vision for sustainable mobility and showcasing its determination to lead in the regional EV landscape.
