SWTCH Energy has announced the successful completion of a groundbreaking EV charging project in partnership with Kite Mobility and the Government of Ontario, supported by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN). The $1.5 million initiative is paving the way for smarter, more accessible EV infrastructure across multi-tenant buildings.
Thanks to $500,000 in support from OVIN’s R&D Partnership Fund and $1 million in industry contributions, the project delivered 15 public Level 2 smart load-managed chargers at a luxury lifestyle resort community in Ontario. By managing energy use through SWTCH Control™, the system dynamically adjusts EV charging in real-time, ensuring stability of local grids even as demand grows.
With limited electrical capacity a growing challenge in high-density areas, the SWTCH-Kite solution showcases how data-driven, software-enabled charging can overcome infrastructure constraints.
“OVIN’s funding enabled us to showcase how EV chargers in multi-tenant buildings, equipped with SWTCH Control™, can positively impact local electrical distribution networks and the grid,” said Carter Li, CEO of SWTCH in a press release.
A key highlight of the project was its integration with Kite Mobility’s EV-sharing platform, enabling residents to reserve and use shared EVs, e-bikes, and e-scooters all while property managers maintain seamless control.
“By teaming up with SWTCH, we are accelerating electric vehicle-sharing services for Ontarian communities,” said Scott Macwilliam, Founder and CEO of Kite Mobility in a press release.
SWTCH now manages over 15,000 chargers across North America and recently secured $27.2M in Series B funding to scale its impact further. In June 2024, it became one of just two North American companies certified by the Open Charging Alliance.
“This project demonstrates how strategic investment, supported through OVIN, can drive scalable solutions that improve grid resilience, enhance sustainable transportation, and unlock long-term growth opportunities,” said Claudia Krywiak, President & CEO, Ontario Centre of Innovation.
Ontario continues to lead the charge toward a smarter and electrified future.
