Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Xpeng has announced a strategic partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) to set up local EV production in Malacca, Malaysia, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion strategy. Mass production at the new facility is scheduled to commence in 2026.
The Malaysian plant will become Xpeng’s third overseas manufacturing project, following similar initiatives in Indonesia and Austria, and its second in the Asia-Pacific region. The move reflects Xpeng’s broader ambition to build a comprehensive international ecosystem encompassing vehicle production, sales operations, charging infrastructure, and customer services.
Under the partnership, Xpeng will leverage EPMB’s extensive local manufacturing expertise to produce electric vehicles tailored for the Malaysian market and the wider ASEAN region. The collaboration aligns closely with Malaysia’s national agenda to accelerate the development of its new energy vehicle (NEV) sector, while supporting the country’s long-term green economy and industrial transformation goals.
James Wu, Vice President of Xpeng, described the venture as a pivotal moment in the company’s international journey. According to James,”Establishing local production in Malaysia represents a major milestone in Xpeng’s global strategy and reaffirms our long-term commitment to the ASEAN region. With EPMB’s proven manufacturing capabilities and our shared vision for innovation and sustainability, this partnership positions us strongly for future growth”.
Hamidon bin Abdullah, Founder and Executive Chairman of EPMB, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the broader impact of the collaboration. According to Hamidon, “Together with Xpeng, we are committed to delivering high-quality, intelligent electric vehicles to Malaysian consumers while contributing meaningfully to the nation’s sustainable industrial ambitions”.
Xpeng’s international momentum continues to gather pace. Between January and November 2025, the company recorded overseas deliveries of 39,773 vehicles, representing a 95% year-on-year increase. Its global sales footprint has now expanded to 52 countries and regions, underscoring the growing demand for its smart EV offerings beyond China.
With local production in Malaysia on the horizon, Xpeng is poised to strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia, enhance supply chain efficiency, and play a more prominent role in shaping the region’s rapidly evolving electric mobility landscape.
